Combating Holiday Stress with Healthy Habits

Holiday Stress affects most adults, but this year may be particularly challenging. This time of year is supposed to be filled with joy and anticipation, but leaves many feeling overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to lessen or prevent these effects. 

1. Eat Well



Consider starting each day with a healthy breakfast, making sure to include fruits and vegetables. Do not skip meals. Feel free to enjoy Christmas treats, but remember too many can leave you crashing later. Offer to bring your favorite healthy dish to the family dinner. 

2. Keep Moving



Some people love their workout routines and should try and keep these on schedule as much as possible. Others may want to try adding some prayer or meditation into a morning stretching routine. This can give you the stamina to face the day. Keeping that body moving can release endorphins that can keep you feeling good and keep depression at bay. 

3. Drink water



Hydration is key. The side effects from even mild dehydration can leave you feeling irritable, cranky, low on energy, and increase your stress level. Keep a full water with you at all times. Adequate water consumption can keep you from overeating too!

4. Get Sleep



Celebrating and connecting with loved ones are what this season is all about, but this can lead to getting less sleep than normal. Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Getting less can lead to more stress and mindless eating to feel better. 

5. Take 5



There is no rule book when it comes to self care. If you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed, plan for something that brings you joy. Take a break from the chaos to call a friend, go for a walk, or take a bath.


For any stress that cannot be eliminated, these coping strategies may help lessen the stress. Remember, when we exercise a little self-care and focus on others, then the holidays can get a little less nerve-wracking allow us to delight in  the season.
